Book of Condolences for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at City Hall September 12 to 16, 2022

The City of Windsor is inviting Windsor residents and visitors to sign a book of condolences to honour Queen Elizabeth II. The book has been set up in the lobby of City Hall (350 City Hall Square West) where it will remain for the next five days, flanked by the Windsor Police Service Honour Guard.

When the official mourning period ends later this month, the signed pages will be bound and sent to the Governor General. A copy will be digitized and made available online in the near future.

Last week, the City reached out to local schoolboards inviting youth to prepare and submit works of art honouring The Queen. Selected works will be included in the final bound book of condolences.

Youth and other members of the general public wishing to submit visual art or poetry should do so on 8.5 by 11 standard paper. Submissions may be dropped off at City Hall, or scanned and submitted as JPG or PDF files to mayoro@citywindsor.ca by Friday, September 30, 2022.

To highlight the important connection between Her Majesty and Canada, the Department of Canadian Heritage is leading a national initiative to illuminate buildings and landmarks from coast to coast to coast. All places visited by Her Majesty in Canada during her reign have been invited to illuminate buildings and sites in a royal blue hue to create a nation-wide visual tribute. The City of Windsor will participate by lighting City Hall in blue for the duration of the mourning period.

Museum Windsor’s François Baby House continues to honour the life and reign of The Queen with their exhibit “The Road to Platinum: Celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s 70 Years on the Throne.” The exhibition is on display at 254 Pitt Street West and is free to the public. Visit www.MuseumWindsor.ca for details.

Information on additional commemorative initiatives and events from the City, including an upcoming memorial service at All Saints’ Anglican Church at City Hall Square, will be released this week.

Last week, Mayor Drew Dilkens extended condolences across the entire Commonwealth on behalf of City Council and the City of Windsor. “I am deeply saddened to learn about the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II,” Mayor Dilkens said. “The world has lost a leader with quiet influence and immeasurable grace. A family has also lost their mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. For many, The Queen was a fixture throughout our entire lives. Her lifetime of service will be honoured and treasured, recognized and debated in the coming days and weeks. The Queen participated in and lived through such significant moments in our shared history, and her contributions cannot be overstated.”

The Queen passed away on September 8, 2022. Her funeral will be held Monday, September 19, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. BST.
