City Council Lifts Mask By-law

Windsor City Council has ended the municipal mask by-law put in place in August 2020 to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

At today’s City Council meeting, councillors voted to end the mandate that required masks to be worn by members of the public using City facilities, though City staff will continue to wear masks indoors and where social distancing is difficult for the time being.

“The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has encouraged organizations to continue to require masks, screening and vaccinations,” says Chief Administrative Officer Jason Reynar. “We’re going to do just that for our staff to continue to mitigate the risks of the ongoing pandemic while we re-open.”

The City of Windsor supports continued masking, though we will no longer be mandating it in all facilities.

Earlier today, the provincial mask mandate ended. For information about pandemic changes provincially, visit the Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 public health measures and advice web page.

Special Note: Mandatory masking requirements will remain in effect for select settings such as, public transit, health care settings, long-term care homes, and congregate care settings.

The City of Windsor will continue to adhere to and promote all health and safety regulations to protect employees and the public, including advocating for vaccinations, enhanced cleaning protocols, wearing masks when social distancing is not possible and hand sanitizing as often as needed. Even though the mask by-law has ended, precautions are still advised.
